As you get older, there shouldn't be anything you won't try. You don't have to like it, but at least you can say, "I gave it a try and I think it's ridiculous."
Things are adventurous only if you don't do them. If you're doing them, they're fun. All those things open up new horizons. It's never too late to take up handball, tennis, or ice skating. So while you are physically able, try snorkeling, try surfboarding. Try all these things that look to you like nonsense or dangerous. Instead of thinking it would be fun to try horseback riding, get on a horse. You may find that you like it. Your muscles may be sore so you have to rub them down, and then you may decide it's more trouble than it's worth. But that's okay too.
If you're down at the shore where there are surfboards for rent, try one. I don't care if you're sixty or thirty and you're afraid of looking foolish in front of your kids. Say to them, "Come on, you can watch Daddy fall down." You add a whole new dimension to your life, and your friends will look at you astonished and say, "You do that?" You just tell them, "You can do it too."
The payoff is that you open up whole new avenues that are fun. You open up a new dimension to your life. It is fun to do something wholly new and different. It recharges the batteries. It exposes you to a whole new interest in life. Suddenly you start reading about it and you see it on TV. You can see things on cable TV you never contemplated. Lawn bowls is the damnedest thing. I say, "Gee, let's try it." "Let's try it" ads much more to your happiness than saying, "I don't know how."
It’s a waste of this life not to live this life. To subordinate the one you’ve got to an indefinite next round is foolish. Every religion takes the Golden Rule as its guide and that’s absolutely essential for this life. What’s next is anybody’s guess.
